For people with diabetes, just drinking a cup of hot chocolate can be a rare pleasure.

A new study reveals that one of the natural compounds in cocoa may help the cardiovascular function of patients with type 2 diabetes.

Investigation published in Journal of the American College of Cardiology (Journal of the American College of Cardiology) states that hot chocolate can become part of methods for preventing cardiovascular disease.

But it’s not just chocolate. The study was conducted with a specially formulated chocolate drink rich in flavanols. These are compounds that occur naturally in cocoa, tea, red wine and some fruits and vegetables.

The study, conducted by German researchers led by Dr. Malte Kelm of the University Hospital in Aachen, followed patients with type 2 diabetes who were prescribed three cups of flavanol-enriched chocolate a day for a month. The researchers found that the patients’ arteries (which had been severely damaged) had returned to normal.

On the other hand, the group of patients who consumed a drink with low levels of flavanols did not show significant differences in the response to dilation of their arteries, the researchers said.

The improvement in patients treated with fortified chocolate is so great, the researchers said, as evidenced by exercise and medications commonly prescribed to diabetics.

Dr. Kelm believes that this improvement is due to the fact that flavanols work by increasing the production of nitric oxide, a chemical in the body that tells the arteries when to relax and when to dilate.

While Dr. Kelm states that “patients with type 2 diabetes can certainly find ways to include chocolate in a healthy lifestyle,” this does not mean that all patients with diabetes jump on chocolate.

Experts point out that while the results are interesting, more research is needed to confirm the long-term effects of consuming large amounts of flavanols.

And for now, they say, people with diabetes are not recommended to drink hot chocolate, as they can also consume large amounts of sugar and fat.

The fortified chocolate drink used in the study is not yet available on the market at the moment, but in time everything will come.
